VISION |
The purpose of the Long Island Chapter of the US Green Building Council is to mirror and advance the core purpose of the US Green Building Council locally; to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.
|
MISSION |
The USGBC-LI is committed to working with our fellow Long Islanders to improve our quality of life by improving the quality of the structures we build and the environment in which we all live, work and play. We are committed to leaving the world a little better than we found it so that future generations have an unfettered opportunity to do the same.

LEED Ceremony and Tour at SCCC Workforce Development Center |
| On September 15th about 100 people attended a USGBC-LI plaque ceremony and facility tour of the recently awarded LEED Gold, Workforce Development and Technology Center located on the Grant Campus of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC). Opened in 2009, it features state-of the-art laboratories and classrooms for training specifc to HVAC and manufacturing technologies.
Over the past two years this facility has offered a very knowledgeable and dedicated teaching staff the proper setting in which to educate the next generation of technicians. Recognizing the need to be energy effcient and environmentally responsible is critical to our collective well being. Understanding the mechanics of how products achieve this goal and being able to install, diagnose and repair products, so that they perform to this increased level of effciency and responsibility, is a challenge that SCCC has taken head on for the beneft of all Long Islanders.

Oct 13 - Introduction to Water Conservation |
| Please join us at this very informative seminar. You will learn why conserving water is so important and the costs associated with collecting, treating, and transporting water in a "centralized" system -- as opposed to using a "building-by-building" method.
You will learn where water comes from as part of the natural hydraulic process and then as a by-product of man's usage. You will learn about Engineering Water Solutions, LEED credits, and options for water conservation in a building.
6:00pm - 8:00pm Thurs Oct 13, 2011 USGBC-LI Headquarters 150 Motor Parkway Hauppauge, NY 11788 Continuing Education Units Available: 1 GBCI, 1 AIA

Long Island Homes Featured on National Solar Tour Solar-powered and green homes will be open to the public for free visits on Saturday, October 1st from 10 AM to 4 PM as part of the National Solar Tour & Green Buildings Open House on Long Island. Tour visitors can learn about solar and other forms of clean energy and energy efficiency directly from people in their community, watch electric meters run backwards, and see the actual savings on utility bills. Tour locations are all over the island from Hempstead to the Hamptons.
These island-wide open houses showcase solar electricity or other green building features such as energy efficiency upgrades, geothermal heat, solar water heating, and even electric cars. The National Solar Tour & Green Buildings Open House is organized on Long Island by the non-profit Renewable Energy Long Island (reLI) and by the American Solar Energy Society at the national level. More than 160,000 participants are expected to visit some 5,500 buildings in 3,200 communities across the U.S.

Empire State Building Gets LEED Gold Perhaps you've been following the massive green renovation at the Empire State Building in New York City -- a.k.a., the $550 million Empire State ReBuilding program. All that hard work has now paid off, not just in massively reduced energy bills for the iconic high-rise's tenants, but in the form of LEED Gold for Existing Buildings certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
This 2.85 million-square-foot building, currently nearing completion of its retrofit and repurposing, just happens to be celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, proving that an old building really can learn new tricks. What's more, the process by which this retrofit was planned and implemented is now available to the general public through what building managers believe is a "game-changing analytical model," designed to reveal economically justified retrofit measures for existing buildings.

Tax Plan to Turn Old Buildings "Green" Finds Favor
A business consortium that includes Lockheed Martin and Barclays bank plans to invest as much as $650 million over the next few years to slash the energy consumption of buildings in the Miami and Sacramento areas. It is the most ambitious effort yet to jump-start a national market for energy upgrades that many people believe could eventually be worth billions. Focusing mainly on commercial property at first, the group plans to exploit a new tax arrangement that allows property owners to upgrade their buildings at no upfront cost, typically cutting their energy use and their utility bills by a third. The building owners would pay for the upgrades over five to 20 years through surcharges on their property-tax bills, but that would be less than the savings.

10,000 Commercial Green Building Projects Earn LEED The U.S. Green Building Council reached a new milestone recently with its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system: The 10,000th commercial building project was certified to the organization's standards. "Ten thousand commercial certified buildings stand as a powerful example that a strong triple bottom line translates to real, tangible success," said USGBC President CEO and Founding Chair Rick Fedrizzi in a prepared statement. An Educational Opportunity at St Paul's School |
| In the shadow of the Garden City Hotel stands an architectural and historical jewel, long forsaken but never forgotten. Earlier this year the residents of Garden City voiced their support and respect for St. Paul's School by voting overwhelmingly against its proposed demolition, ensuring that this irreplaceable landmark will continue to grace the community and its residents. Constructed in 1879 by Cornelia Stewart, widow of Alexander Turney Stewart, St. Paul's was to form the nucleus of her husband's vision of a "planned community" and served for years as an all-boys college preparatory school. This magnifcent high Victorian Gothic structure was never intended to serve as a monument; it was designed to serve the residents of the young village.
