QUICK LINKS
VISION
The purpose of the Long Island Chapter of the US Green Building Council is to mirror and advance the core purpose of the US Green Building Council locally; to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

MISSION
The USGBC-LI is committed to working with our fellow Long Islanders to improve our quality of life by improving the quality of the structures we build and the environment in which we all live, work and play.  We are committed to leaving the world a little better than we found it so that future generations have an unfettered opportunity to do the same.

Simple Ways to Lower Your
Energy Costs:
Preventive HVAC Maintenance

by Rudy Holesek (Apollo HVAC)

Most new technologies are only considered for implementation if their payback (R.O.I.) is a reasonable amount of time.  There is an often overlooked opportunity to lower energy costs that has an R.O.I. of less than a year.   That opportunity is operation Rudy Holesekand maintenance . . preventative maintenance, not reactive maintenance.  Studies done by the U.S. Department of Energy have measured results of numerous facilities and the "average" ROI for an aggressive preventative maintenance program had a 0.26 year payback!

Reactive maintenance, sadly, is the "run it till it breaks" approach.  Even sadder is the fact that about 55%  of facilities today take the reactive maintenance approach, compared to 31% using the preventative maintenance approach.   U.S. Department of Energy studies have documented between 3% and 40% energy savings -- with an average energy savings of 15% -- when an aggressive preventive maintenance program is employed.

LEED for Homes Scoring Tool

The LEED for Homes Scoring Tool is an easy way for anyone to get acquainted with green building and the LEED for Homes rating system.
                  LEED for Homes Scoring Tool
The Quick Score path is intended for people new to LEED for Homes and allows users to answer very general questions about green building.   After answering approximately 15 questions users will receive an approximate certification level.

The Credit by Credit path is a walk-through of the rating system with a built-in checklist in which users can review credit requirements and indicate Yes, No or Maybe that the project will meet the intent of that specific credit.  It calculates the points for each credit category.
