HISTORY
We were born in 1973. An energetic group of young
lawyers with a desire and vision to build lasting relationships and secure
the innovations that shape technology. Now, over 40 years later we represent
some of the most innovative Fortune 100's and start-ups in America and
around the world. We are proud to have obtained Intellectual Property
protection for and defended through litigation some of the most important
modern technological breakthroughs in biotechnology, computer science,
electronics, chemistry, materials, physics and mechanics.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Ingenuity. How is it measured? By its cleverness?
By its resourcefulness? By how long it remains unique? We believe ingenuity
is an organic process. A process that shapes how one moves, breathes,
grows and survives. And we believe it needs to be safe in the hands of
those whose wisdom gave it life. Because of this, we have armed ourselves
with knowledge in highly advanced areas of science and technology so there
is not a single discovery - not a single tangible idea - that we cannot
decipher and secure.
RANGE OF LEGAL COUNSEL
We are a true full service Intellectual Property
law firm. The ability to provide a full range of services at the highest
quality starts with a solid foundation anchored by our ability to prepare
and prosecute patent applications and every one of our patent practitioners
is extensively trained in the art of patent prosecution. Because of this
we are better counselors, better litigators and widely recognized as one
of the leading IP law firms in America. One of the cornerstones of our
practice is our ability to provide scientifically sound, precise and reliable
opinions regarding validity, infringement, clearance/right-to-use, state-of-the
art, patentability, and valuation opinions. We are also proud of our experienced
and aggressive litigation team which views the litigation process as a
tool - a means to achieve a business objective. Thus, our efforts end
with favorable results and settlements within defined budgets. We have
the infrastructure to seamlessly team with in-house counsel and utilize
client's support staff, in-house engineers and scientists for expert technical
advice during pre-litigation analysis as well as during trial.
Our trademark and copyright specialists prepare and
prosecute applications for the registration of trademarks and copyrights
worldwide and render availability and infringement opinions. We also counsel
clients in the areas of unfair competition, the protection and misappropriation
of trade secrets and trade dress, and related trade regulation matters.
EDUCATION & PRO BONO
One of our founding attorneys, John F. Scully,
a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, envisioned the immense importance of high
technological standards in the field of intellectual property. As an Adjunct
Professor of both Patent Law at Hofstra University and Organic Chemistry
at Queens College, Dr. Scully believed education in law and technology
was essential to the procurement, exploitation and enforcement of intellectual
property.
Following directly in Dr. Scully's footsteps is partner
Frank S. DiGiglio, who is an Adjunct Professor of Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology
Patent Law at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Mr. DiGiglio works
hard to provide unique insight for his dedicated students on the current
developments in these ever-changing, high profile areas.
Furthering Dr. Scully's education principles, we have
partnered with the Center for Biotechnology at State University of New
York at Stony Brook to develop and establish the first patent law internship
for graduate students in life sciences. We are also proud to have founded
the Scully, Scott, Murphy & Presser Innovation Award at Stony Brook University.
Each year, undergraduate seniors design and prototype an aide or toy for
children with disabilities. In recognition of the most innovative design,
our attorneys will apply for and prosecute a patent application in the
inventors' names. Our programs provide students with invaluable insight
into the field of intellectual property and, perhaps more importantly,
allow us to contribute to our community while fostering the growth of
technology.
We have also forged a relationship with Touro School
of Law. Each semester a student will enroll in our Touro/SSMP externship
program designed to offer real-life experiences, placing the student in
situations impossible to replicate in the classroom. The relationship
is aimed to better prepare the specific student for a career in Intellectual
Property and to better the overall quality of attorney practice in our
growing scientific and legal field.
Through guest appearances, writing articles and other
presentations, we continue to further the development of our field. Because
we make it a tradition to stay informed of all advances in technology
and science, our attorneys have lectured and been published all over the
world.
